Heading off to university is an exciting step for any young person, but moving away from home to live on campus does come with some risks.
The Guardian recently reported that sexual misconduct has been highlighted as a problem at UK universities, with more than half of students saying they have experienced unwanted advances and assault, ranging from explicit messages to rape.
A survey of 5,649 students in January 2019 for the charity Brook and the student database Dig-In, found that 56% of respondents said they had encountered unwelcome sexual behaviour, including inappropriate touching, explicit messages, catcalling, being followed and being forced into sex or sexual acts.
Although attacks are rare, safety charity the Suzy Lamplugh Trust recommends that students consider carrying alarms, particularly when travelling or going out at night. The charity says: “Think about getting a personal safety alarm. Keep it in an easily accessible place and carry it in your hand if you feel at risk.”
Here at Walk Easy Alarms, we are the personal security specialists and have been supplying universities and colleges for more than 20 years. We stock the latest range of UK-approved, reliable personal safety alarms, rape alarms, keyrings and DNA sprays. All our products are rigorously tested for reliability and quality.
For example, the Trident Attack Deterrent is the ultimate and best value personal alarm available. Made in the UK, it is robust and easy to use. It releases an ear-piercing 138+ decibel sound, a repelling odour and an ultraviolet tracer.
There are also electronic alarms which, as well as emitting an extremely loud alarm, produce a bright flashing LED strobe. They also have a built-in torch. Many are small enough to be carried as a keyring.
