Plan to introduce drones to help women feel safer at night

Written by Michael Gibbard, published 01-11-22 Women feel safer

A plan is being officially submitted to parliament to use drones to help protect women at night. Controlled from an app, the drones will be fitted with AI tech, thermal cameras, and a spotlight. Concerns about womens safety at night have prompted this project, which is specifically being considered to help women feel safer at night, as they could be summoned within minutes directly from your phone. In fact, drones could become a significant tool for womens safety at night if this program expands nationally.

The service would cost as little as £100 per hour, which is a fraction of the cost of police helicopters. Additionally, the drones could be stationed on the roof of any police station, ensuring local coverage. Each drone would flood light onto the scene and stream video footage. This footage could help deter or apprehend an attacker, directly impacting womens safety at night.

The system is being trialled at Nottingham University. Moreover, it could potentially be used to tackle all antisocial behaviour, sexual and violent crimes. Importantly, trials like these highlight ongoing public concerns regarding womens safety at night.

Combined with a handheld alarm this could be a welcome addition in helping women feel safer walking alone at night. To find out more detail about the story click here
